Client Access Express on Windows ME

Article ID: 14586

Q: I'm running V4R5 on my AS/400

and Client Access Express 4.5 on my remote PCs. The Express client works fine with all my Windows 95/98 shops. However, I recently bought a PC with Windows ME pre-installed. I can set up Client Access on the new PC, but when I try to connect to my AS/400, I get a Winsock error. How do I connect the Express client 4.5 to the AS/400? Do I need a service pack for either the PC or the AS/400?

A: Yes, you need Service Pack SF65706 for Client Access, which you can download at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/as400/products/clientaccess/win32/v4r4m0/servicepack/sf65706

. In addition, be sure to check that you have all your networking parameters set up correctly. I'd recommend that you ping the AS/400 from the PC. If the ping fails to respond, you can be certain that nothing else will work. A failed ping will point to either a hardware problem or an incorrect TCP/IP configuration on the PC.

If pinging the AS/400 is successful, the next step after you install Client Access and Service Pack SF65706 is to run the cwbping utility from the PC. The cwbping tool will test connectivity with all AS/400 host servers. If cwbping fails, there may be a problem with the host servers not being started or perhaps a corrupted installation of Client Access Express. You can use the StrHostSvr command to restart any inactive AS/400 host server.
