Ready, Set, Replicate!

DBMoto's Enterprise Manager is a simple GUI that helps set up any sort of database replication or synchronization you desire. Enterprise Manager provides many setup wizards that even the least experienced IT professional can use. It has wizards for setting up new database connections, creating target tables, planning and scheduling a replication, and more. Unlike other database replication software that may require a consultant just to set up database replications, DBMoto can be set up and managed in-house.

Also, DBMoto supports replication between all major databases, including all DB2 databases and even open-source databases. Replications can occur across different databases as well. Therefore, most replications are possible within one software solution, and most IT staff implement DBMoto without any outside consulting, according to HiT Software. So, the next time the IT team thinks it's time to synchronize databases, all it has to do is start up DBMoto and run through the wizard screen instructions. It is even possible for DBMoto to manage a number of replications on only one connection, lightening the stress on database systems and the IT staff.

So...Which Is the Target?

HiT Software's DBMoto has three different modes of replication: refresh, mirroring, and synchronization. The refresh mode offers a complete replication from a source to target table, or a continuous refresh that takes place on a regular schedule. In mirroring mode, the software frequently checks a table on the source database for changes, then immediately makes those changes to the target database. In synchronization mode, both source and target databases are updated to match the other if anything changes in either database.

And there are other ways DBMoto replicates information. The software offers realtime replication based on the user's scheduling requirements. In most cases, it replicates from one table to one table. But in some cases, it also can replicate from one table to many tables, from many tables to one table, or many tables to many tables. HiT Software says it is working on new developments in this area for release in 2009.

It's Okay to Fall

When learning the art of synchronized skating, one must take a tumble every now and then. DBMoto gives the power to even the not-so-i system experts to set up database replications and view errors when the replications fail. DBMoto also offers email alerts when a source or target connection fails. And DBMoto's Enterprise Manager has a log viewer that helps users spot errors. Figure 1 shows the log viewer capability.

But never fear if a failure occurs! DBMoto has a Backup Metadata function and a Restore Metadata wizard, so when something fails, nothing is too difficult to recover.

Go for the Gold

In addition to the many capabilities HiT Software's DBMoto offers, it also requires no programming on any of the source or target databases. That way, you don't weigh down your databases with unnecessary gunk.

You can also customize DBMoto by writing Visual Basic .NET scripts. Plus, the Enterprise Manager can be remotely accessed for centralized configuration and management. So, if database replication gives you headaches — DBMoto may be the champion you are looking for.
