Linoma Software launches Envoy, a development tool that helps programmers add browser interfaces to legacy iSeries applications and bypass the need for interactive processing. Envoy uses a client/server implementation at the source-code level, ensuring compatibility across all OS/400 releases. It provides a 5250-like interface in HTML that supports all major 5250 keywords, offers full-keyboard support, and lets modified applications behave almost exactly as they do on a 5250 terminal. Envoy converts RPG programs automatically, doesn't require developers to know Java or HTML, and supports all major record types, including subfiles, message subfiles, and pop-up windows.

Kisco Information Systems unveils ScreenSafer/400, an iSeries workstation-security tool that takes control of inactive workstations during idle time to protect sensitive information and limit access to authorized users. ScreenSafer/400 doesn't terminate user sessions during idle time, so users don't lose their place or lose transactions. Instead, the software temporarily disables workstation use so user profiles can't be hijacked and animates user displays so sensitive information is illegible to passersby. To restore session functions, authorized users simply need to reenter their passwords.

HiT Software, Inc., unveils DB2Motion, a utility that replicates iSeries application data to Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle application environments. DB2Motion enables forward replication to external servers but doesn't enable iSeries database updates. The product includes wizards that help administrators define destination SQL Server or Oracle tables; it requires no application changes or modifications to source or target systems. DB2Motion operates on a Windows client, supports native VBScript functions, and uses replication criteria based on iSeries tables and monitored via the OS/400 journal.
