IBM has released its new Rational EGL Community Edition tool. The tool provides a no-cost, entry-level development tool for learning Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) and building feature-rich Web 2.0 applications. EGL Rich UI, an extension of EGL, enables developers to deliver rich Web 2.0 style solutions without needing for them to learn or program the intricacies of Ajax, JavaScript, REST, HTML, or XML. Based on a subset of the capabilities of IBM Rational Business Developer 7.5.1, IBM Rational EGL Community Edition 1.0 includes all the capabilities needed to build a complete solution: Eclipse-based development environment; editor for visually constructing Rich UI applications, including a palette that contains available widgets, an outline view that shows the hierarchy of widgets, and a properties view to enable quick editing of widget settings; rich out-of-the-box widget library, including subset of Dojo Dijit and DojoX widgets; REST and SOAP web service support; support for backward/forward and history within rich UI application; and publish/subscribe mechanism that enables simplified messaging between UI components.
