Paul Musselman responded to the recent article dealing with the User Profile USROPT parameter.
Here's what I said about the *ROLLKEY option:
"This user option is a hoot! I guess some folks just don't get the metaphor of page up and page down. It seems backwards to some. So, if you set the *ROLLKEY option for a user, the functions of page up and page down are reversed."
Here's Paul's note on the history of the *ROLLKEY User Option:
"This is to allow users who remember the 5250 family of terminals, which used ROLLUP/ROLLDOWN instead of PAGEDOWN/PAGEUP. The metaphor of a ROLL key was to "Roll" your viewpoint up or down the page--you were moving and the document stayed still. The PAGE metaphor is the opposite--you are moving the page up or down past your fixed viewing window. It's what you're used to.
It was when the AS/400 was renamed the S/38 that the command keys got rearranged and ROLL became PAGE. IMHO, they goofed up the command keys to follow the "PC" custom at that time."
Thank you for your note, Paul.
